When discussing her character as well as the parallels to her reality, Brugel may relate to racism and the discrimination she's faced in other areas of her life. She explained: "I lean heavily on race, and as previously mentioned, have experienced past situations where I felt like I was treated like a slave just because I am african-American." Although I have never experienced physical harm due to the color of my skin however, I have certainly experienced the verbal abuse. When someone is saying something threatening or smacking them or smacking me, I will use any racist or physical insults that are real to me. I use that feeling throughout the show because it feels like I'm being hit in some way in almost each scene."
